Magnetic resonance imaging is the process of visualizing the human body through images created by the magnetic resonance of radio waves. Preparing for an MRI Scan?
MRI scanning is a non-invasive procedure and therefore, there is a small amount of preparation required for imaging. The patient’s body is not exposed to radiation during the scan. Patients are asked to change into hospital uniforms and may not be allowed to eat or drink before MRI scans. Your prescribing instructions will determine whether food is allowed before the scan.
To be screened by a comparison agent, the patient may be injected with a comparison agent with an IV line. MRI scan is performed after the injection. Photos before and after the injection are essential for complete photography. In patients suffering from claustrophobia or who are afraid to enter confined spaces, appropriate counseling is provided to prepare them for the scan. Some of them may ask for a mild sedative to help the patient feel drowsy. Ear plugs are usually provided to the patient so that they are not affected by continuous clicking sounds inside the MRI scanner.
What happens during an MRI Scan?
The MRI scanner is located in a separate glass enclosure on one side and has a satellite phone for the specialist to talk to the patient on the scanner. The patient is asked to lie comfortably on a moved scanner table.
Once the patient is comfortable, the table is slowly moved into the opening of a large cylindrical MRI scanner that holds the magnet. As the device allows radio waves to pass through a patient’s body, the machine constantly scans images of various body parts.
The patient may hear a continuous knock on the door while the images are clicked. The Radiology specialist discusses the patient further and reviews it with the following steps. Throughout the photography process, the patient needs to remain steady to avoid blurring the images taken and stored on a computer. The radiologist examines all the images to clarify and complete the doctor’s prescription before announcing the MRI scan.
How long does an MRI Scan take?
An MRI scanner can take anything between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the size of the data and the scan that the doctor has decided to diagnose.
What happens after an MRI Scan?
After the MRI scan is completed, the patient can move quickly and resume normal activities. If the patient is slow to relax, there should be a responsible adult to accompany him or her home.
